Happy Sunday lovelies!
I type this particular Sunday Chat as I sit under the hair steamer (aren't you guys glad that I've been up on my posting game?) but it is based off of something I noticed a few weeks ago.
About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I mentioned something on FB about cutting my hair. You guys have to understand, prior to my hair journey, I was that girl who cut her hair every 2 years. Like clockwork. I just like a short cut. So every now and again, I long for a fierce cut but I don't do it because I know I would be crushed (you don't put in years of work to grow your hair just to cut it off). Anyway, I got a bunch of posts saying "Nooooooo! Don't do it!" And that tickled me.
Every time I have cut my hair, I have always gotten comments from other people. Back in '09 when I got my cut, the entire salon went dead quiet as the stylist put those scissors to my hair (no lie---you could hear a rat piss on soft cotton in that salon). After it was done, I heard comments like " I'm trying to get my hair to where hers is and she's cutting it." Ma'am.....it's my hair. If I want to cut it, so what?
A similar thing happened in '05. I cut my hair short on whim ( I literally woke up that day and wanted my hair cut). I get back on campus to attend a game and I am bombarded w/ questions as to why "I cut all that hair off" ( mind you, I was a raggedy SL at the time). Again, it's my hair and I felt like it.
It always tickles me how folks are so invested in your hair and what you choose to do with it. It used to frustrate me when I was younger but now I'm just kinda amused by it all.
Have you noticed this in your day-to-day life? How do you feel about it?
"Back in '09 when I got my cut, the entire salon went dead quiet as the stylist put those scissors to my hair (no lie---you could hear a rat piss on soft cotton in that salon)." LOLOL #dead
ReplyDeleteIf I even mention to my mother I'm considering cutting my hair, or that I trimmed my hair, my mother yells at me. I think if I chopped it all off my mother wouldn't talk to me for a week. I don't even bother telling my boyfriend when I trim my hair because he glares at me and says that woman are trying to grow their hair and I'm just cutting it all off. My friends react the same way - I guess I'm forbidden from cutting my hair, ever. I think it's absolutely hilarious!
Girl all attention was on me! It was like the salon collectively couldn't believe that I was cutting my hair! Oddest feeling ever.
DeleteIt's funny how folks feel like they have a say in your hairas if it is growing out of their scalp! Folks are a trip!
Everyone I know is anti-trims/haircuts... Especially my boyfriend. The look on his face if I mention even dusting my ends is hilarious. It's reached a point where if I need a trim I don't even mention it because I honestly don't want to hear it.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand that...especially if you aren't cutting it for real. Does you bf want you to walk around with raggedy ends or something? lol
DeleteI get both sides. For the past year I've been cutting away raggedy...see through ends...nothing even worth holding onto and each time my guy friend is like "but why did you cut it?!" I literally just stare. Then again, I have NEVER liked short hair and when/if I want it, wigs/weaves give me that option so I kinda don't understand the urge for ppl to cut their hair, it really baffles me. Now...the crazy looks and a million questions as to why I wear weave (I imagine you get the same with wigs) I don't understand. I mean we all know I have hair, why can't I wear weave if I wanna?
ReplyDeleteHmm...for me I get the urge to cut my hair short is b/c I like short hair ( always have..don't ask me why lol). If you aren't a fan of short hair then yeah, the urge is difficult to understand lol.
DeleteI think w/ weaves and wigs, people still connect them to people not really having hair. So when someone with hair is getting a weave and/or a wig, they really really don't get it. It's kinda annoying and you want the folks to stay out of your hair but that what folks do :/
I am rolling on the floor laughing! My 3rd year of varsity I cut my hair fiercely short, AND asymmetrical. My man friend at the time almost had a hernia when he saw me a couple of days after. I've been keeping my hair short for years, till I started my journey. NOW, whenever I wear my hair out (and I'm not even full SL yet, mind you) people are all about "Your hair looks awesome!! YOU BETTER NOT CUT IT AGAIN!" (In a scary Lily from How I met you Mother voice) And I agree - it's mine, so I'll do what I feel like with it! (although I highly doubt cutting it that short again any time soon, this growing business is no joke)
ReplyDeleteLOL! It's funny how guys get so tired up in our hair!
